According to a report in Business Standard, the Telecom Authority of India, is looking at regulating Over-the-Top (OTT) players such as WhatsApp and Skype. Telecom service providers have been complaining for a long time that they have to make huge investments in laying down the infrastructure for providing services and in acquiring spectrum. By riding on the infrastructure laid down by the telecom service providers, OTT players have been able to provide compelling services, which in turn, has led to a decline in SMS usage and voice calls.
Industry reports says that TRAI is shortly expected to come out with its recommendations on net neutrality and whether OTT players must be regulated. The challenge for TRAI would be to balance the interests of the telecom industry, while simultaneously encouraging innovations.
