Bihar’s first woman Chief Minister Rabri Devi gave a hilarious comment on the 11th of June. On the occasion of Lalu Prasad Yadav’s 70th Birthday , Rabri expressed her expectations from her future daughter-in-laws saying that only a ‘ Sanskaari’,’ "non mall going girl just like her", would be a suitable match for her sons Tej Pratap and Tejashwi Pratap Yadav.
She described her dream daughter-in-law and said that "Cinema hall aur mall jane wali ladki nahi chahiye. Ghar chalaane wali, bade buzurg ka aadar karne wali, jaise ki hum hain, waisi ladki chahiye”. Meaning, she wants a girl who does not visit malls and cinemas, respects elders and is a homemaker, just like herself.
This comment of hers led to an online spree, where people mocked her comments and her patriarchal reasoning. Rabri’s absurd comments made Indians question the thought process of the former Chief Minister, believing that probably all the women empowerment campaigns have escaped her ears. The irony is that her sons own a land in Bihar where Bihar’s biggest mall is being constructed and is currently under corruption allegations. Inspite of all the progress and woman empowerment campaigns the concept of a ‘Sankaari Bahu’ is intact.
When Lalu Prasad Yadav was forced to quit as the Chief Minister of Bihar in 1997 after being chargesheeted in the fodder scam, Rabri Devi had to take up his position as Proxy CM. Hereon, she resorted from her household chores to the political drama of Bihar. She was indeed an obedient wife serving on her husband’s behalf. Now, two decades later, her search for a good daughter-in-law has started on a controversial note, where ironically former CM wants a Desi Bahu who does not go to a mall.
