Professor Abhay Karandikar the present Director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has been appointed as the Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DST). He has taken over this important role from Dr. Rajesh Gokhale who had been holding the holding the additional charges alongside his position as the Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology.
The decision to appoint Prof. Karandikar was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Prof Abhay Karandikar, Director, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur to the post of Secretary, Department of Science and Technology (DST) from the date of assumption of charge of the post till the date of his attaining the age of 60 years or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” the official notice stated.
The Department of Science and Technology has a crucial role in promoting India's scientific research and technological innovation. And, with the appointment of Professor Karandikar as the head of this department steering its efforts to promote scientific research and technological advancement across the country.
Prof. Abhay Karandikar is widely recognized for his expertise in the field of electrical engineering particularly in the telecommunications sector. His contributions to the telecommunications industry have been substantial with an impressive portfolio of more than 20 patents. His research interests include frugal 5G technology and rural broadband connectivity, areas that are of great significance in India's quest for digital inclusion and connectivity.
Apart from his role as the Director of IIT Kanpur, Prof. Karandikar has been actively involved in the design and implementation of BharatNet which is a government initiative aimed at providing broadband connectivity to rural areas of India. He was also one of the founding members of the Telecom Standards Development Society of India (TSDSI) and also served as its chairman. His experience and insights into bringing the digital divide in the country and his contribution to setting industry standards make him well-suited to address the challenges and opportunities in the field of science and technology.
