Artificial intelligence and machine learning have emerged as powerful technologies in recent times. These technologies have led to the emergence of innovative business models that can disrupt the way business is done. In addition, artificial Intelligence and machine learning can help the country augment its capacities in healthcare, improve education system, and develop innovative governance systems. These data-driven technologies are helping businesses scale operations and offer personalized customer experience, while also effectively solving real-world problems across sectors. It is estimated that by 2035, India's GDP can expect a contribution of about $957 billion from AI.
Program Initiatives
To foster the growth of artificial intelligence and machine learning by building an AI ecosystem in India, the NITI Aayog has signed a Statement of Intent (SoI) with Google. As part of this national program, The NITI Aayog will focus on research and development in artificial intelligence by way of research grants, training and mentoring, and organizing hackathons. The NITI Aayog will develop a national strategy on artificial intelligence and will push for greater deployment and use of artificial intelligence through the National Data and Analytics Portal.
Training and Incubation
Under this program, Google will train and incubate Indian AI startups in conjunction with its affiliates to help these startups leverage AI in their respective businesses. Google will offer its online courses on AI as study groups and develop-run courses across Indian cities. Google will also conduct tailor-made training programs for policymakers and technical experts in the government on relevant AI tools that can help streamline governance.
Research and Development
Apart from training, the NITI Aayog and Google will work together to promote research and development initiatives in artificial intelligence and machine learning by awarding grants and scholarships to researchers, scholars, and university faculty. The two partners—NITI Aayog and Google—will also organize a hackathon focusing on solving key challenges faced across sectors including agriculture, education, healthcare, financial inclusion, transportation/mobility and so forth.
