Microsoft Azure has become the first major cloud provider to introduce a licensed, multi-tiered Redis service, Azure Managed Redis, now available in public preview. This fully-managed, first-party Redis offering delivers up to 99.999% availability through multi-region Active-Active architecture, ensuring sub-millisecond local latency globally and providing cost-efficient Redis capabilities on Azure.

Announced at Microsoft Ignite in Chicago, Azure Managed Redis integrates Redis’ latest infrastructure features and support for diverse use cases. It currently offers Redis 7.4, with plans to add Redis 8.0, making the platform accessible across hyperscale cloud environments.

Key Features and Benefits

1. Performance Upgrades
Azure Managed Redis introduces eight advanced data structures, including JSON, vectors, and time series, alongside the most scalable Redis Query Engine to date. Enhanced capabilities include vector search, full-text search, geospatial queries, numeric data handling, and rapid data processing, making it a robust multi-model, real-time platform.

2. Scalability and Compliance
Users gain unmatched scalability with up to 99.999% availability via CRDT-powered multi-region Active-Active configurations. This allows applications to deliver consistent sub-millisecond latency globally. Azure Managed Redis also meets stringent compliance standards, including FedRamp, HIPAA, PCI DSS, and ISO 27001.

3. Developer Ecosystem
Developers can leverage tools from both Azure and Redis ecosystems, including Redis Insight, Redis’ official GUI, and AI-based features such as Redis Copilot. Integration with Azure AI and Redis' vector database enhances real-time GenAI applications. Additionally, client libraries for popular languages such as .NET, Python, Java, and Go enable seamless development experiences.

Seamless Migration and Collaboration

Existing Azure Cache for Redis users can easily migrate to Azure Managed Redis, unlocking enhanced performance and access to Redis innovations that were previously exclusive to premium tiers.

“Azure Managed Redis marks a new milestone in our collaboration with Microsoft. It offers the highest-performing caching platform for Azure developers,” said Rowan Trollope, CEO of Redis.

Balan Subramanian, Microsoft Partner Director of PM, Developer Division, added, “Azure Managed Redis empowers developers to build faster, more powerful cloud and GenAI applications, optimizing costs and accelerating innovation.”
