In a major effort to nurture India’s artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has launched a Rs. 10,372 crore initiative named “IndiaAI Mission”. As part of this mission, MeitY is inviting nominations from premier institutes like IITs and NITs for an AI fellowship program.
What are the eligibility criteria for the AI fellowship?
The AI fellowship is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students pursuing technical degrees.
- B.Tech students should be those who are enrolled in the top 50 NIRF-ranked engineering colleges with an overall score of 80% or above in their latest semester are eligible to apply.
- M.Tech students must be enrolled in AI-related postgraduate programs and undertake a thesis on AI or related subjects.
Each eligible institute has been asked to nominate 10 students from each category (B.Tech and M.Tech) who are currently working on AI projects. The selected
fellows will receive the following financial support:
- B.Tech Fellows: Rs 1 lakh fellowship disbursed in three installments.
- M.Tech Fellows: Rs 2 lakh fellowship spread over four tranches of Rs 50,000 each.
One of the primary objectives of the AI fellowship program is to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application of AI. The government aims to ensure a steady pipeline of skilled AI professionals to meet the growing industry demands by providing financial assistance and mentorship to talented students.
Hence, the AI fellowship program is a key component of the broader IndiaAI Mission, which will be officially launched on July 3-4 at the Global IndiaAI Summit. The mission carries the vision to position India as a global leader in AI by focusing on areas such as research, skilling, startups, and responsible AI development.
