Mahindra University announced the launch of its School of Design Innovation, aiming to nurture the next generation of design leaders. This initiative boasts a unique partnership with Pininfarina Design Academy (Italy) and Shenoy Innovation Studio IDC IITB, providing students with mentorship from design luminaries worldwide.
The inaugural academic session kicks off on August 15th, 2024, with a Bachelor of Design program. The curriculum offers a comprehensive blend of design fundamentals like sketching, engineering labs, prototyping, and digital tools. Students can then specialize in Industrial Design, Communication Design, or Experience Design. Notably, the program integrates cutting-edge technologies like AR, VR, and AI. The learning culminates in a Capstone Project tackling real-world industry challenges, allowing students to showcase their chosen specialization.
Dr. Yajulu Medury, Vice-Chancellor of Mahindra University, said: "As India embraces technological advancements, new skillsets are crucial. The School of Design signifies a leap forward in our commitment to educational excellence and innovation. We believe design goes beyond aesthetics; it's about crafting solutions for real problems. Our program equips students with the expertise to excel in the future job market."
Eligibility for the program is open to all students who have completed their 10+2 education and possess a passion for design and sketching. A portfolio showcasing their work is required for application, with shortlisted candidates called for interviews. The School is offering a noteworthy 25% Chancellor's Scholarship, amounting to INR 1 lakh annually, for the first batch.
Prof. B. K. Chakravarthy, Founding Dean of the School of Design Innovation, elaborates, "Design innovation is a powerful problem-solving method that merges creativity with strategic thinking. We guide students to translate their ideas into groundbreaking products and services. A user-friendly interface is as vital as the technology itself, and that's what makes a product market-ready. Through hands-on experiences, field visits, and cross-cultural design boot camps, we aim to equip our students with the skills and mindset to address complex challenges. Our vision goes beyond design concepts and prototypes; we leverage industry partnerships to help them bring their creations to market, truly turning their passion into their profession."
Chakku's 7Cs
The curriculum will be guided by Prof. Chakravarthy's framework, "Chakku's 7Cs," which incorporates seven crucial aspects of Design Thinking for Innovation into all student projects. These 7Cs encompass The Cause, The Context, The Comprehension, The Check, The Conception, The Craft, and The Connection.
