In a move that aligns with its commitment to open-source AI, IBM has released the Granite models under the permissive Apache 2.0 license, providing enterprise clients and the broader community with enhanced performance, flexibility, and autonomy.

Viswanath Ramaswamy, VP of Technology at IBM India & South Asia, commented on the launch, stating, “As Indian businesses embark on their generative AI journey, many are limited by the data available to today’s LLMs, with most enterprise data remaining untapped. Our new Granite models address this by offering truly open and cost-efficient AI solutions, optimized for tasks like RAG, classification, summarization, and entity extraction.”

Granite 3.0 includes 8B and 2B language models tailored for enterprise AI, delivering robust performance for various tasks. These compact models are designed for fine-tuning with enterprise data, allowing for seamless integration across diverse business environments.

The Granite 3.0 models demonstrate impressive performance on standard academic benchmarks, leading in safety and RAG capabilities compared to models from Meta and Mistral. Trained on over 12 trillion tokens from multiple languages, the models are expected to include support for an extended 128K context window and multi-modal document understanding capabilities by the end of the year.

Additionally, IBM introduced the Granite Guardian 3.0 models, which enhance safety features by enabling developers to implement guardrails for user prompts and LLM responses, thus promoting responsible AI use.

The complete suite of Granite 3.0 models, along with updated time series models, is now available for download on HuggingFace and IBM's watsonx platform. This release further solidifies IBM's position as a leader in the AI domain, empowering businesses to leverage advanced AI capabilities efficiently.
