Cisco layoffs 7% of workforce

Cisco Systems, a heavyweight in the computer networking industry, has initiated a major restructuring with a second round of job cuts this year, affecting 7% of its workforce as the company shifts its focus towards burgeoning sectors like artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity.

Based in San Jose, California, Cisco is facing substantial changes; approximately 6,000 jobs are expected to be cut based on the company's current employee count of 84,900. This follows an earlier reduction of about 4,000 employees in February.  Cisco is streamlining its operations to better align with the evolving tech landscape, which increasingly demands robust AI and cybersecurity capabilities.

The layoffs coincide with Cisco's intensified investments in AI technology sectors poised for rapid growth. In June, the company announced a $1 billion investment in tech startups such as Cohere, Mistral, and Scale, focusing on developing reliable AI products. Moreover, a recent partnership with Nvidia aims to enhance infrastructure for AI systems, showcasing Cisco’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge technologies into its core operations.

Despite the job cuts, Cisco's financial performance remains robust. The company reported earnings that exceeded Wall Street expectations, with a net income of $2.16 billion and revenue of $13.64 billion in the latest fiscal quarter, although these figures represent a decline from the previous year.

As part of its restructuring efforts, Cisco is also optimizing its internal operations. The integration of recently acquired cybersecurity and analytics company Splunk, in a deal worth $28 billion, is a key component of Cisco's strategy to bolster its security offerings. The consolidation of its networking, security, and collaboration departments into a unified division further illustrates Cisco’s push towards more integrated, AI-driven solutions.

This strategic realignment allows Cisco to not only refine its product offerings but also improve its competitive stance in a market that is increasingly dominated by companies specializing in cloud computing and AI technologies. With these changes, Cisco is poised to remain a significant player in the global tech arena, driving innovation and setting new standards for the industry.
