JioFiber Speed and Ranking Drops Further on Netflix ISP Speed Index

Jio Fiber, which once used to top the Netflix Internet Service Providers’ Speed Index, has now dropped to the 4th place on this list for India. The JioFiber speed on Netflix ISP has now reduced to 3.17MBPS for the month of August 2019 from a 3.50MBPS it had in the month of July 2019. Although Netflix ISP is a measure of Netflix performance the mentioned ISPs, and not a measure of overall performance for other services or data that may travel across the specific ISP network, this drop in speed and ranking could be alarming.

Spectranet has topped the Netflix ISP list for August 2019 with a speed of 3.33MBPS followed closely by 7 Star Digital with a speed of 3.32MBPS. Airtel stands at the third position with a speed of 3.21MBPS. The speed here indicates the average playback bit rate. JioFiber, known earlier as Jio GigaFiber, had been consistently topping the Netflix ISP speed index from the month of September 2018 up to April 2019. However, the Internet service provider was overtaken by 7 Star Digital in May 2019 after which JioFiber has not been able to regain the top slot on Netflix ISP.

Why it May be Tough for JioFiber to Claim the First Place on Netflix ISP?

The highly awaited JioFiber services were unveiled on a commercial basis on 6 September 2019. However, the prices of the service are on a ‘higher side’ and are contrary to the expectations of consumers who were hoping for disruptive plans like the ones offered with Reliance Jio mobile services.

The base plan itself is being offered at Rs 699 that will provide a speed of 100MBPS and 150GB of data. Speed of 1GBPS is being offered with only platinum and titanium plans, which cost Rs 3999 and 8499 per month that could be a bit high for several Indian consumers.

So if the current plans are to be considered, it might be a Herculean task for Reliance to retain on gain new consumers, thus giving other local players who are offering higher data at cheaper prices the much-needed edge.

Features Unique to JioFiber

Although JioFiber is being offered at higher than expected prices, there are certain features that are unique to the service provider, which are as follows: JioFiber services offer all-weather entertainment due to which TV can be viewed even during heavy rains; JioRemote will allow users to control their TV through voice commands; zero latency, mixed-reality based gaming experience; users can use their smartphones as game controllers; and so on.
