With the Jio GigaFiber launch expected to happen in the second half this year, the installations and laying of fiber cables are taking place in a phased manner. While consumers eagerly await the commercial launch of Jio GigaFiber to enjoy high-speed Internet services at affordable prices, the latest development that has come to the surface may not be encouraging.
Jio GigaFiber, which had been consistently topping the Netflix Internet Service Providers (ISP) Speed Index since September 2018, has for the first time been toppled from the first place in the month of May 2019. The Reliance Jio service has been overtaken by 7 Star Digital with an average playback bitrate of 3.54Mbps. Jio GigaFiber stands at the second place with an average playback bitrate of 3.53Mbps, and Spectranet follows Jio GigaFiber at a close third with an average playback bitrate of 3.51Mbps. Airtel takes the fourth spot with a significantly higher playback rate when compared to last month of 3.39Mbps.
However, consumers need to note that although Netflix Speed Index is often referred to for the speed of an ISP, it does not mean that the overall speed of Jio GigaFiber has dropped. Netflix Speed Index only measures the average prime time bitrate for Netflix content streamed to Netflix members during a particular month. Netflix also measures the speed via all available end user devices.
“The Netflix ISP Speed Index is a measure of prime time Netflix performance on particular ISPs (internet service providers) around the globe, and not a measure of overall performance for other services/data that may travel across the specific ISP network,” says the Netflix ISP website.
While other players like ATRIA Convergence Technologies, You Broadband, Hathway, and Syscon Infoway have managed to retain their previous rankings, D-VoiS has overtaken Excitel Broadband to capture the 9th spot with an average playback rate of 2.90Mbps.
