Jio GigaFiber, a service that is being eagerly awaited in India, has so far only started to roll-out and is yet to launch fully on a commercial scale. Nevertheless, the Reliance Jio owned subsidiary has already managed to create euphoria among Indian consumers with its promise of extra fast Internet at affordable prices.
Even before its final launch, it seems like Jio GigaFiber is proving that it is indeed fast. In the month of September, Jio GigaFiber made a debut at the top on Netflix Internet Service Providers (ISPs) speed Index with an average playback rate of 3.41 Mbps. And for the month of October, Jio GigaFiber has topped the list again with an average playback rate of 3.48 Mbps.
According to data released by Netflix ISP LeaderBoard Jio GigaFiber maintains its top rank, followed by 7 Star Digital, Spectranet, Airtel and ATRIA Convergence Technologies. Hathway, which was recently acquired by Reliance Jio, figures at the 7th place with an average playback rate of 2.73 Mbps. The state owned BSNL Broadband and MTNL figure at the 13th and 14th positions, respectively.
The Netflix ISP Speed Index, however, is a measure of prime time Netflix performance on particular ISPs around the globe, and not a measure of overall performance for other services/data that may travel across the specific ISP network, says a message on the Netflix ISP Speed Index website.
The website also makes it clear that Netflix ISP Speed Index lists the average prime time bitrate for Netflix content streamed to Netflix members during a particular month. The speed indicated in the Netflix ISP Speed Index is not a measure of the maximum throughput or the maximum capacity of an ISP
Nonetheless, the fact that Jio GigaFiber tops the ISP Index list in India of the world’s leading internet entertainment service with over 125 million members in over 190 countries is no mean feat. While users wait for the service to be available in 1500 cities across India, news like this might keep them motivated.
Jio GigaFiber registration has started and the company is offering 100GB monthly data at 100Mbps for the first three months from the date a consumer registers for the service. Users will also get 40GB additional data after 100GB gets exhausted, the recharge for which can be done via MyJio App and the company’s official website at no additional cost. Users need to submit a security deposit of Rs 4500 that is refundable.
Those interested to avail the service need to invite Jio GigaFiber to their respective areas by logging onto to the company's website. The areas with maximum registrations and invites will experience the service first.
