The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has invited applications from interested participants for a free online course on Geoinformatics for Disaster Management. The free course will be conducted by the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), and will mark the 75th Outreach programme of the organisation. Participants will also receive certificates from ISRO upon successful completion of the course.
The course would be most suitable for professionals from the Central or State government, Private Organizations, NGOs engaged in hydro-meteorological based regional and national projects as well as students and researchers aligned to research or are already working in disaster risk reduction activities The eleven days course will be conducted from 5 to 16 April 2021, and interested applicants have been advised to apply soon as there are only a limited number of seats that are available.
What The ISRO Free Online Course on Geoinformatics for Disaster Management Will Cover?
The course aims at giving participants an understanding of geoinformatics which is an umbrella of remote sensing, geographic information system, global positioning systems, and internet mapping services, can be used for all phases of disaster management including hazard mapping, monitoring, risk assessment, emergency response and reconstruction. The course will cover the following aspects:
- Basic concepts of remote sensing.
- Basic concepts of geographic information system.
- Overview of UAV for disaster monitoring and mitigation.
- Overview of the global navigation satellite system.
- Web Portals and data services for disaster risk
Some of the applications of geoinformatics in disaster risk reduction are an overview of geoinformatics technology and its role in mainstreaming DRR, geological hazards, hydrological hazards, forest fire hazards, drought hazards, coastal hazards, and atmospheric and pollution hazards.
