IIT Madra's first International Campus Inaugurated in Zanzibar

In a significant move towards globalizing education, IIT Madras has set up its first-ever international campus in Zanzibar. The campus was inaugurated on 6 November 2023 by Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, the President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council.

This initiative is a part of the Government of India’s efforts to extend high-quality education from India to the global stage.  This current campus is located in approximately 15 kilometers south of Zanzibar Town in the Bweleo district and is equipped with modern amenities to cater to the needs of students. A permanent campus is also in the planning stages with a joint effort between the Government of Zanzibar and the Government of India.

Initially, IIT Madras Zanzibar will offer undergraduate (BS) and postgraduate (M Tech) programs in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, with plans to expand the academic offerings in the near future. The first batch of students is from Zanzibar, mainland Tanzania, Nepal, and India with a notable 40 percent representation of female students.

The campus provides students with comprehensive facilities including dormitories, offices, classrooms, auditoriums, dining facilities, and a dispensary. Additionally, the sports facilities are also in their planning stage to support students’ holistic development.

The inauguration was attended by prominent figures including Prof. Adolf F.MKenda, Minister of Education Science and Technology of the United Republic of Tanzania, Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, India’s High Commissioner to the United Republic of Tanzania, Lelo Mohamed Mussa, Minister of Education and Vocational Training in Zanzibar as well as esteemed professors and officials from IIT Madras.

IIT Madras Zanzibar is set off to a promising start with a diverse cohort of students committed to making a positive impact through education and innovation. The campus with strong local support and government backing is certain to become a prominent international institution in the African region.
