Flipkart's Republic Day Sale 2017 comes as a strong reminder that the competition in the ecommerce space is getting fiercer day by day. While it is bad for the companies, it is good for the consumers who can buy their favorite stuff at discounted prices. In the Republic Day Sale which is running from 24th Jan to 26th Jan, Flipkart is giving huge discounts on many products belonging to several categories. It is easy to assume that the sale is the response to Amazon.in's Great Indian Sale which got a huge response.
Flipkart is offering huge discounts on TV, appliances, laptops, cameras and more. Besides, it is offering discounts on certain credit cards. Flipkart has tried to ramp up its categories and delivery services to woo consumers in all parts of the segments and given choices to buy products even in EMIs. It is apparent in categories such as smartphones and electronics appliances.
While this sale is the response to Amazon.in's Great India Sale, there are other ecommerce players such as Snapdeal, Shopclues and others which are in the fray with their sales. Even Big Bazaar, a multibrand retailer, is running its Republic Day Sale across stores.
In the last one year, Flipkart has faced a significant challenge from the American counterpart Amazon which is catching up fast in the ecommerce space in India and which is expected to surpass in the coming days to become the number one player. Adding to the woes, Flipkart has lost on the valuation side steeply. Morgan Stanlay has valued down the company to a little more than $5 billion. At one time, Flipkart was valued more than $15 billion. It would be interesting to see how the etailer maintains its balance sheet and topline in the coming days amid the intense competition.
