In addition to streamlining access, PAN 2.0 eliminates the need for paperwork by introducing fully digital and eco-friendly processes. PAN issuance and updates are now sent directly to the user’s registered email ID, although users can still request a physical card for a nominal fee.

What Happens to Existing PAN Cards?

Existing PAN cardholders do not need to apply for new cards under PAN 2.0. The current PAN cards remain valid, and their functionality remains unchanged unless holders choose to update or correct their details. Those seeking enhanced features, such as the QR code, can request an updated card under the new system. This ensures that the transition to PAN 2.0 is seamless and non-disruptive for users.

The dynamic QR code integrated into the new PAN cards is a significant advancement. It facilitates quick validation of PAN details, including name, date of birth, and photograph, when scanned using a dedicated reader application. Updates and corrections can also be done without charge, and physical PAN cards are available at a nominal cost of ₹50 for domestic delivery. International users can obtain their cards for ₹15 plus postal charges. These measures make PAN 2.0 both user-friendly and cost-effective.

Tackling Duplicate PAN Cards

The system has been enhanced to identify and deactivate duplicate PAN cards, addressing a long-standing issue. Holding multiple PANs is a violation under the Income-tax Act, 1961, and offenders face penalties of ₹10,000. The new mechanisms ensure better compliance and reduce instances of duplicate PANs.
