India’s sprawling road network, the second largest in the world, extends over nearly 4 million miles and is dotted with more than a thousand tollbooths. Despite the scale, most of these tollbooths operate manually, contributing to relentless traffic delays and frustrating congestion that plagues the daily commute of millions.

Recognizing the need for change, Calsoft has partnered with NVIDIA to usher in a new era of tollbooth automation by leveraging advanced vision AI applications. Calsoft is helping to transform India’s highways, seamlessly integrating cutting-edge technology with the country’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to streamline toll collection and ease the burden on commuters.

Automation in Action with Layered Technological Innovation

At the heart of this innovation lies a multi-faceted technological framework designed to tackle the unique challenges of automating toll systems in a country as diverse as India. Central to this effort is NVIDIA Metropolis, an AI application framework that combines visual data with artificial intelligence to enhance operational efficiency and safety. This framework serves as the backbone of the solution, enabling real-time tracking and detection of vehicles as they pass through tollbooths.

Supporting Metropolis is NVIDIA Triton Inference Server, a software layer that manages AI models and ensures seamless deployment and scaling. This layer is crucial for processing vast amounts of data generated by the tollbooths, providing real-time analytics that drives decision-making processes. Additionally, the NVIDIA DeepStream SDK is employed to build a robust real-time streaming platform, which powers advanced capabilities such as object detection and classification, crucial for accurate license plate recognition.

Tackling India’s Diverse License Plate Landscape

One of the most significant hurdles in automating India’s tollbooths is the non-standardized nature of the country’s vehicle license plates. These plates vary widely in color, size, font, and language, posing a challenge for traditional Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems. The layered AI technology from NVIDIA, combined with Calsoft’s expertise, addresses this challenge by enhancing model accuracy, even under difficult conditions like low light, fog, or heavy rain.

Their solution, currently piloted in major cities across India, boasts a 95% accuracy rate in reading plates. This is achieved through an advanced ANPR pipeline that meticulously detects and classifies license plates as vehicles pass through tollbooths.

A Vision for Scalable Solutions

Beyond its current deployment, Calsoft’s tollbooth automation solution is designed with scalability in mind. Powered by NVIDIA Jetson edge AI modules and A100 Tensor Core GPUs, the system is prepared to evolve alongside India’s ever-changing traffic landscape. The potential for expansion is vast, with applications extending to other high-traffic areas like malls, airports, and metro stations.

This partnership between Calsoft and NVIDIA not only represents a significant stride towards easing road congestion and improving the efficiency of India’s highway network but also highlights the power of AI-driven solutions in solving complex infrastructure challenges. As India continues to modernize its road networks, this innovative approach sets the stage for a more efficient and intelligent transportation system.
