Public sector holds on to the top rung: Last year’s Megaspenders survey had an overwhelming public sector flavor, with eight of the top ten IT spenders coming from this segment. Life Insurance Corporation dominated the ranking, with a spend of Rs140 crore on its ‘Anytime, Anywhere’ facility. That massive implementation over, LIC slipped a few rungs, but it was PSUs that continued to remain on top. PSUs grabbed the top three slots and accounted for about 60% of the Top 10 IT spend in the country. DQ estimates placed Punjab National Bank with an IT spend of Rs180 crore as the top corporate IT spender.

We looked closer at why banks were figuring so prominently in our list for two years running. The reason cale from the CIOs’ own statements—given the success of tech-savvy private banks, PSUs had little choice but to embark on IT-enablement of their operations. PNB has tied up with Cisco to evolve the network design and implement a nationwide network backbone connecting all its offices across India. The rollout will cover about 300 branches, come March 2003, and will be extended across 1,000 PNB branches by 2004. Given its IT spend, it was little surprise that PNB bagged the ‘Best Bank Award’ for excellence in banking technology from IDRBT in October, 2002. Similar is the case with Canara Bank, which has tied up with Wipro Infotech to interconnect its 835 offices and branches across 98 cities, using a high-speed WAN.
