IDBI Bank: Banking on IT
IDBI Bank has focused on IT to offer cutting-edge technology-led services
Thursday, February 24, 2005

Sanjay Sharma, IDBI Bank

The IT initiatives at IDBI bank can be summed up by the motto of its technology department-"where technology redefines service." Total investment of Rs 75 crore in technology is part of the plan to put in place building blocks for creating the right organizational infrastructure, which would help IDBI Bank in consistently delivering superior products, convenient across channels and efficient service to its retail and corporate customers.

IDBI Bank was the first to launch a new product called Gift Card-a rupee-dominated pre-paid card. It is also the only bank to harness the capability of MMS to develop an "ATM locator" application: By sending an SMS indicating the desired location, the customer receives the ATM map on his MMS-enabled mobile.

Accolades have not been late in coming-IDBI's Internet banking service was rated the best amongst all Indian private and public sector banks by Asian Banker; Dataquest Mobile Banking Survey, 2003 rated IDBI as the most feature-rich mobile banking service in India. Amongst the private sector banks, IDBI was the first to go live with Online Tax Accounting System-Phase 3 from December 2003. It was also the frontrunner with respect to secured electronic transmission of tax collection data through the usage of Digital Signature Certificates.

IDBI Bank has deployed a "No single point of failure" configuration for core mission critical systems. Sun servers have been installed for enabling the core banking application. Independent servers exist for the application and database components. Important subsystems like the Web component are hosted on a separate server to improve performance and scaling. The storage subsystem is configured as a SAN with RAID 0+1 configuration.

Key Highlights
• First to launch a rupee-dominated pre-paid card
• 'ATM Locator' application using MMS
• First to go live with Online Tax Accounting System

Since IDBI Bank has a centralized database along with Finacle core banking application, ensuring online connectivity is of paramount importance. The network backbone is distributed across five regions. Each of these regions has two network hub centers connected by 2 Mbps ISDN links. The service outlets-the branches and ATMs-are connected to one of the hub centers within the region via a 64 Kbps leased line, backed up by ISDN dial-up lines. Others connect to the bank's central IT center through PAMA satellite links, while off-site ATMs connect through TDM/TDMA VSATs to the service provider's hub, which in turn connects to the central IT center through a 2 Mbps terrestrial line.
